Patroitic America Gnome DIY Sign. Step-by-Step Instructions
Prepare your Design:
Download the Free America gnome SVG file from the freebie library, design #160. This SVG is compatible with vinyl cutting machines like Cricut and Silhouette. Open the file in Design Space and adjust the size to fit your surface.
Using the “move object” feature arrange your elements for faster cutting.
Send the design to your cutting machine. Load the appropriate vinyl colors onto your cutting mat and follow the machine’s instructions to cut the design.
Prepare your Wooden Star:
While your vinyl is cutting, paint the wooden star with white acrylic paint. Allow the paint to dry completely.
Weed the Vinyl Design:
Carefully weed your design. Take your time to ensure clean edges and remove any small pieces from within the design. Using painter’s tape, tape the base layer to the small cutting mat.
Use Parchment Paper for Layering:
To add the stars to the gnome’s hat, lay a piece of parchment paper on top of the blue body base. Leave one end of the transfer tape to hang over the design so it can stick to the carrier sheet of the blue body vinyl. Line up the stars on top of the parchment paper to match the design. Carefully remove the parchment paper, leaving the vinyl stars in place. Use a squeegee to smooth down the design.
Continue to layer and build your gnome using the parchment paper technique.
Prepare your Star for Vinyl:
Use a sanding block, or sandpaper, to sand the star. Making sure the area is smooth. Wipe off all dust and debris with a dry paper towel or lint-free cloth.
Transfer the Vinyl Design to the Wooden Star:
Begin with the word America. Pick up your gnome design and position it on the painted wooden star, centering it to your liking.
Press the transfer tape onto the wood surface, starting from the center and working your way outward. Use a squeegee to smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles, ensuring a secure adhesion.
Paint a Border:
Take a baby wipe and dip it into blue acrylic paint. Lightly swipe the baby wipe around the edges of the wooden star, creating a painted border.
Add Decorative Dots:
Using a dotting tool or the end of a paintbrush, create dots around the star to add a whimsical touch. Dip the tool into blue, yellow, and red acrylic paint and gently press it onto the wooden surface, creating dots of various colors. Experiment with different sizes and placements to achieve the desired look.
Add a hanger of your choice, and there you have it!
